The Trend page provides a way to see trend attributes plotted against each other.
The date range dropdown determines the range of data to be displayed in the problem chart going back from present time. The options currently available are:
The default option when the Problem page is first loaded is for “1 Day” so that one day of data going back from present time will be loaded into the chart. This way if you notice a trend you want to research further, you can then choose the larger range options to view this data and see if this is something that has been a trend for some time or is new and then act accordingly.
Note the data displayed is generally average values over intervals (five minute intervals for the “1 Day” option, 30 minute intervals for “1 Week” and 60 minute intervals for “1 Month”) as plotting all the raw data in the chart can cause performance issues and hamper the user experience. Raw data can be plotted in the chart if desired, please see Raw Data for more information on this option.
Located next to the Date Range dropdown option is the Calendar Picker, which allows you to select the starting date for the range of data show in the trend chart.
This option is useful if you want to look at historical data in Observer as available in the system. By default, Observer stores the past month's data but please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more information about storing historical data for a longer period.
To select a date, click on the calendar button next to the date range option:
A calendar will appear for you to select a date:
After selecting a date and pressing the “OK” button, the trend chart will refresh with this date as the starting date with respect to the date range option selected.
For example, if you choose the date “February 9, 2015” with the “1 Week” date range option, the trend chart will display data for the next week starting from February 9, 2015.
As mentioned in the Date Range configuration option, data points used to create a trend chart are averages over intervals (i.e. for a trend chart with the “1 Day” option selected, the data points are averages over five minute intervals) as plotting every data point can cause performance issues.
When this option is checked, raw data will be shown in the trend chart instead of averaged data. Note that because the raw data can be rather large, it may take longer to reload the chart especially in the cases were there are many attributes selected and/or the date range is one week or one month.
When you are viewing the Trend chart, click a button and get an aggregate table generated for you according to the date-time range you have selected that includes all the metric in the chart. The generated table will contain AVG, MIN, MAX, STD-DEV, and the total COUNT of the values in the range.
As a freebie, you can also click the buttons on the top right of the aggregate table and download the raw data in that range, or download the aggregated values in CSV format. Enjoy!
So as to allow easier viewing of many attributes on the same trend chart as well as provide more ways to analyze the data, the ability to display trend chart data as percentages has been added.
This feature is toggled on and off with the “%” button and when toggled on, all trend chart attribute data will be displayed on the same y-axis as percentages of each attribute's maximum value in the chart's data range e.g. a “SQL selects (Averaged)” data point will be its value as a percentage of the maximum “SQL selects (Averaged)” value in the chart's data range.
Because this feature and the Y-Axis Lock option both use only one y-axis, the two features will toggle off of each other such that when one is active the other is automatically toggled off. For example, if the Y-Axis Lock option is currently active and the “%” button is pressed to toggle on this feature, the Y-Axis Lock option will then be automatically toggled off.
For the cases where you are selecting multiple attributes for a trend chart and many of these attributes have a similar name that you are finding by typing in the same keyword, you can now quickly add all them using the “Add All Attributes” button.
After entering a keyword (such as “SQL in”) in the attributes dropdown list, the list will display attributes that are case-insensitive matches for the keyword:
By then clicking the “Add All Attributes” button located to the left of the dropdown list, all the matching attributes will automatically be added to the list of selected attributes and the trend chart will be rendered locked to one y-axis to allow viewing the added attributes immediately.
To allow easier selection of multiple attributes in one pass, trend charts will no longer be refreshed automatically after selecting or removing an attribute from the attribute selection list.
Instead, a “Render Chart” button has been added that when pressed will render the trend chart with the attributes selected. As well, after selecting an attribute, the list will automatically re-open to allow selection of another attribute without having to re-open the list each time.
By popular request, the ability to lock all trend chart attribute data to the same y-axis has been added. This feature is turned off by default when loading the Problem page but once selected, all attribute data will use the same range for the y-axis.
When enabled, the maximum y-axis value is determined from the maximum of all attribute values in the period e.g. “1 Day”. Similarly the minimum y-axis value is the minimum of all attribute values in the same period. All attributes will then be plotted on a single y-axis and to provide context on where the maximum data is occurring, the attribute with the maximum value in the period will have an asterisk (*) next its name in the chart's legend.
There is now an option to select 1 hour (1h) time range for trending. We have noticed that the previous minimum of 6 hours was not enough to show multiple trends of wide frequency range and so we have added this option. Furthermore, we have addressed the bug of the Trend chart resizing when zoomed in and when chart attributes were modified.
When displaying flags in a trend chart and the maximum number of flags have been shown, the warning message will now display the actual maximum number reached. The flags dropdown list will now list the number of times each flag is shown in the trend chart so as to provide better context on which flags are occurring the most and to help with filtering out the ones that be unnecessary to display.
Flags will now be displayed along the bottom of the chart on the x-axis. Previously the flags were displayed on the first plot line in the chart. Since there is no direct correlation between the attribute plot line and the meaning of a flag , we decided to move the flags away from the plot lines to enhance visibility.
Image and PDF options allow you to download an image of the trend chart itself as shown on screen.
Starting in v3.3.0, the option to download the actual data in the trend chart has been added, allowing you to download this data in CSV and XLS format.
As of v3.19.0 Downloading for PDF, CSV, and Xls formats is no longer supported due to Highcharts plugin security issues involved with downloading these formats.
